Governor Proclaims Homeownership Week In South Carolina - 6/2/1998
[Columbia, SC] Governor David M. Beasley once again emphasized the need for affordable housing opportunities in the state when he declared June 6-13 as South Carolina Homeownership Week. This is the second year that homeownership Week is being observed nationally, as well. It is a project of the HUD initiative "Housing 2000."
The proclamation states that "homeownership strengthens families, builds communities, and promotes personal well-being." Governor Beasley called upon the South Carolina Partners in Homeownership to act as a catalyst among state and local endeavors in a collective effort to increase affordable homeownership. (Note: Copy of Proclamation attached.)
The South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority is the lead agency for the South Carolina Partners in Homeownership and one of over 30 public and private groups in the state working actively as an affiliate of the National Partners in Homeownership. The national strategy wants to help 8 million Americans become new homeowners by the end of the year 2000, increasing the homeownership rate from 65.4 percent to an all-time high of 67.5 percent.
The South Carolina Partners are currently assessing homebuyer needs, according to Gene Spivey, chairman of the State Housing Authority's Board of Commissioners. "This group is using local and private resources to identify and reduce barriers to owning a home," he said. "That's critical to our success."
In observance of Homeownership Week, the Partners are sponsoring a Homebuyers Fair at Columbia Mall this Saturday, June 6. Authority executive director Dave Leopard called the Fair an example of the South Carolina Partners in Homeownership's education and outreach commitment. The Homebuyers Fair will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Columbia Mall's Center Court. Area mortgage lenders, government program representatives, and other housing providers and related services will have displays and be on hand to meet the public and answer homeownership questions.
