State Forum Addresses the Future of Affordable Housing in South Carolina - 12/10/2008
From the sub-prime debacle, to the foreclosure crisis, housing issues have dominated both the news and the public debate throughout 2008. The role of the housing market and its future has never been more important than it is now and will be in the coming year. Against this backdrop of national urgency, the South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority is preparing for the state’s most comprehensive convocation of housing advocates, professionals and policy makers.
The Annual Palmetto Affordable Housing Forum, to be held January 28-29, 2009 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, is hosted by the South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority, the Affordable Housing Coalition of South Carolina, US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs and U.S.D.A. – Rural Development. This event, now in its fourteenth year, is expected to attract over 500 affordable housing professionals – including representatives from local, state, and federal government, for-profit and nonprofit organizations across the state.
Designed for both the novice and the experienced housing professional as well as those interested in improving the supply and condition of affordable housing in the state, the Forum offers South Carolinians working in the housing arena and related industries an opportunity to stay abreast of the latest developments in affordable housing and provides the perfect arena to share ideas and build relationships to help expand housing choices for our citizens.
With more than 25 sessions relating to subjects that impact the affordable housing community the Forum will probe areas of interest to anyone with an interest in affordable housing and its myriad impacts on our state’s economy and future prosperity. Important discussions will include:
- South Carolina Landlord/Tenant Law
- Homeownership Opportunities through South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority
- Dealing with Debt
- Making Homes Energy Efficiency
- Housing Discrimination/Fair Housing Act
- Neighborhood Stabilization Program
- HUD’s Foreclosure Prevention Program
Winners of the South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority annual South Carolina Housing Achievement Awards and its heart-warming “What My Home Means to Me” Coloring and Essay Contest for children will be presented at an awards luncheon hosted by popular television personality Judi Gatson.
