Governor Declares June as Homeownership Month - 5/29/2003
Governor Mark Sanford encouraged all South Carolinians to work together to increase affordable housing for the citizens of the Palmetto state as he designated June as South Carolina Homeownership Month. The proclamation urged everyone to work together to provide all families with the tools and information they need to overcome barriers to homeownership.
The South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority, the South Carolina Partners in Homeownership and over 40 agencies statewide are committed to working together to expand affordable homeownership opportunities in South Carolina especially in rural areas and among underserved populations.
“Homeownership in South Carolina has increased over the past several years due to the teamwork of these agencies. In 1996 homeownership was at 72.9 percent, today it has increased to 77.3, a 4.4 percent increase,” said Dan Rawls, chairman of the board of directors for the South Carolina State Housing Authority. “Although these figures are impressive, it does not mean that our job is finished. We can increase these figures if we continue to work together towards the common goal of increasing affordable homeownership opportunities to the citizens of our state.
