SC Housing rings in the new year with 7,500+ affordable units in the works
As we step into 2024, we are optimistic about the promise of more affordable housing developments for South Carolinians. Last year, the South Carolina state legislature approved plans to allocate state and federal housing tax credits, along with available housing trust funds, to help projects impacted by the recent COVID19 pandemic move forward. 60 new and 13 rehabilitated affordable housing developments, representing 6,810 new and 905 rehabilitated units are expected to begin construction in 2024 or are already under construction as a result of this and other legislative efforts — providing families in our state with the fresh start that they are hoping for as the new year rings in.
When individuals share with us how affordable housing impacts their lives, they go right to the heart of the matter. They mention that it brings them joy to finally have a place where their family can live safely and flourish. They express satisfaction about being able to find a quality home that they can afford—a place that they can make their own. Most importantly, they express hope for a brighter future.
We are reminded daily about the critical role that affordable housing plays in shaping communities and changing destinies. As we look ahead, SC Housing remains committed to adapting our programs and building partnerships to help meet the diverse housing needs of individuals and families throughout the Palmetto State.
Together, let's make 2024 a year of growth, resilience, and impactful advancements in housing. Stay tuned for updates, success stories, and insights into the initiatives that will shape the housing landscape in South Carolina throughout the coming year. Thank you for being an integral part of the SC Housing community as we work towards a future where every South Carolinian has access to quality housing.
Thank you for embarking on this journey with us!
SC Housing joins HUD, city of Columbia for tenants' rights, landlord responsibilities workshop
The city of Columbia’s Community Development Department, in partnership with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), hosted a tenants and landlords rights and responsibilities workshop on Thursday, January 18, 2023 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.
SC Housing joined other local partners in sharing information with tenants about how to report issues and concerns when living in properties subsidized by HUD. SC Housing works on behalf of HUD to help get issues addressed so that residents can live safely in their homes.
Tenants knowledge of their rights under federal, state and local regulations and laws is an important part of this process. The workshop helped tenants and landlords learn more about the role of the various organizations responsible for enforcement and compliance. Landlords also had an opportunity to learn about their rights and how they can protect their properties. How to report issues when living in subsidized housing or under tenant-based Section 8, code enforcement, housing discrimination, evictions and requirements under the South Carolina Landlord Tenant Act, as well as federal requirements for receiving relocation assistance, were some of the topics discussed at the workshop.
To make a report to SC Housing, call (803)896-9007 or 1-800-236-3994.
